How to Get Kids to Cooperate for a Photoshoot (Without Bribing Them… Too Much!)

As a Lewisporte photographer specializing in family and child photography in Central Newfoundland, I know firsthand how unpredictable kids can be during a photoshoot. And as a mom of three—a 13-year-old girl, a 6-year-old boy, and a 2-year-old girl—I’ve had plenty of experience navigating the chaos of little ones who don’t always want to sit still and smile on command!

One thing my clients always tell me is, “You have so much patience with kids!” The truth is, I don’t expect them to be perfect—I expect them to be kids! Instead of forcing stiff poses, I make sessions fun, engaging, and relaxed. Here are my top tips (and a few personal tricks) for getting natural smiles and genuine moments during your child’s photoshoot.

Play Silly Games

Forget saying “cheese”—that rarely gets a real smile! Instead, I love using fun little games to bring out giggles naturally. Some of my favorites:

  • The Tickle Sneak Attack – I tell parents to get ready for a surprise tickle battle! This always gets the best belly laughs.

  • Animal Sounds Challenge – I ask kids to make the silliest animal noise they can (and then I join in). The more ridiculous, the better!

  • The Freeze Game – I tell kids to run or jump around, then suddenly yell “Freeze!” in a funny voice. They crack up every time.

Give Them a “Job”

Kids love to feel like they’re in charge! I might ask them to be my “assistant photographer” and help me press a pretend button on my camera. Or I’ll let them pose their siblings (which usually turns into a hilarious and sweet moment). When kids feel involved, they cooperate much more naturally.

Let Them Move!

Expecting a toddler to sit still for long? Not happening! Instead, I embrace movement—running, jumping, twirling. Some of the best photos come from those in-between moments when kids are just being themselves.

Use Their Favorite Things

I always ask parents ahead of time about their child’s favorite songs, toys, or characters. If a two-year-old is obsessed with Bluey or a six-year-old loves dinosaurs, I’ll casually mention them in conversation. It instantly lights up their face!

Embrace the Chaos

Some of my favorite photos are the perfectly imperfect moments—siblings being goofy, a toddler making a silly face, or a little one running straight toward the camera. Those are the real moments you’ll look back on and love!

At the end of the day, my goal as a Lewisporte family photographer is to make sessions enjoyable for everyone. If your child is feeling shy or extra wiggly, don’t stress—I’ve seen it all, and I’m always ready with a trick (or ten) to bring out their best smiles.
